As part of his childhood education, Gandhi attended both regular and cultural schooling system. After passing his high school examination, he joined the local college at Bhavnagar, but very soon found that college was not a challenging place. He returned home and his eldest brother suggested that Gandhi should go to England and study law.

On September 4, 1888, Gandhi left India to attend law school in London, England. On June 10, 1891, he graduated from law school with very high marks.

Gandhi was appointed as a lawyer for a group of Muslim businessmen at Durban/South Africa.
It was a long journey from India to South Africa. Gandhi reached the port of Natal towards the end of May, 1893.
- He was thrown out of a first class train, while he was on a business trip to Pretoria/South Africa, because he was “colored.”
- He was humiliated and beaten in stage-coach while was traveling from
Charlestown to Johannesburg. At Johannesburg he was refused a room in
the Grand National Hotel, because he was “colored.”
